As one of the host cities, Cairns will host Festival 2018, in conjunction with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The festival will be a bold arts and cultural 12-day program designed to galvanise the region, inspire audiences and celebrate the games.
There will be a Live Site set up on the Cairns Esplanade where people can watch the games live on big screens and enjoy free live performances. The Live Site will reflect the Cairns region, beautiful natural environment, cultural diversity and unique Indigenous history.
Cairns Esplanade will be closed to traffic between Aplin and Shields Streets to create one huge al fresco dining area to add ambience.
Festival 2018 program of events will include:
- Live Site on Cairns Esplanade will be abuzz from 10am to 10pm daily during the games
- "Cairns is Beginning" musical theatre performance at Munro Martin Parkland
- Visual Art Exhibitions at Cairns Art Gallery, UMI Arts and Tanks Arts Centre
- Live Dance Peformances at Live Site Lagoon
- Roving Entertainers on Live Site Lawn
- Opening Night live entertainment and fireworks on 4 April from 5.30pm
- The Cat Empire will perform at Live Site on Sunday 15 April
- Get active with one hour exercise classes.
